| Painting with a Palette Knife. One day workshop, Art League of Fort Myers
I like to use palette knifes as an exercise in staying loose creatively. It forces me not to get caught up in too many details that can actually detract from a painting. Even with the knives though I am often surprised just how detailed I can work.
Another great thing about using the knives is the way colors can be mixed right on the painting in an expressionistic way. This can give a painting flow and ‘pop’ that over-mixing and over-painting kills. The 3D texture that using a knife automatically creates adds even more eye-pleasing character to a painting.
Using palette knives is easier than you think and it has many possibilities for hours of fun painting as well as helping to further develop your artistic talent.
One day workshop - $75
Materials
Canvas panels or gessoed boards, approx 4 to 6. Sizes can be from as small as 5” x 7” to 11” x 14”. Bring a variety, smaller sizes are good for small practice pieces.
Your choice of acrylics, medium to heavy bodied is best, oil paints or water based oil paints. Bring a variety of colors. I recommend 2 of each primary, one warm and one cool, titanium white and any others you like to work with. Optional, -bring some fun colors if you want (like magenta, purples, turquoises etc.) as palette knife painting can lend itself well to being more daring with colors.
Low odor brush cleaner if using oil paints. Brush cleaning jar.
Mixing palette.
Rags or paper towels.
One or more painting palette knives. Diamond shaped with a bent handle is best. A couple of brushes in case you need them for details.
Some photo references, at least two or three, to work from. I usually do landscapes but any subject you like to paint is suitable. There will also be some still life objects in class for practice.
A way to carry wet paintings home like the lid of a box.
I will bring some of my paintings and also demo.
