Artist Statement, (about my choice of subject and style of painting)
My art is how I translate my journey with nature into my paintings. When I go outdoors to explore the world of nature what I always experience is enjoyment and gratitude as I soak in the beauty. My breathing deepens, stresses fall away and I feel a calming, centering and humbling pleasure. That is what I capture and express in my oil and acrylic paintings.
I use bold shapes and colors with strong compositions to draw the viewer into the scene to experience it with me. I want my art to take you to a place you love and also to remind us all what we have to lose if we do not conserve and take care of the fragile eco-systems around us.
I use oil or acrylic for their different characteristics and choose according to what each painting needs to tell the story. I also vary my brushwork from loose, textured and painterly to smooth, tight and detailed depending on what I want to say with each piece. I also incorporate glazing and building up of transparent layers of paint to achieve glowing colors, soft edges and depth.
